Many mistakes made in a business are difficult to correct. Naturally, every situation is a little different. But for the most part, you’re in a situation and then have to do some kind of damage control. Even a fatal mistake is a learning experience that can help you if you ever decide to start over again. You will always have another chance to begin again, even if it’s from scratch. Online businesses, the small business types, have the luxury of quickly rebounding. If you’re smart, you will start off by studying the kind of mistakes other businesses have made and learn the lesson painlessly.

If you have an online business or intend to start one, make sure you don’t make this one mistake that is almost unforgivable. The mistake is going for the kill, making money, before anything else. They did not take the time to hardly say, hello, and they wanted me to buy from them or buy a recommendation. It’s completely unacceptable for someone to behave in this manner when they have an email list, which must be cultivated over time if it to be worth anything to the business person. It’s not only newbies who do this, either. I’m on lists of well-known marketers, and I won’t hear from them in months. After I’ve practically forgotten about them, they’ll send an email trying to get me to buy something. My own reaction is to delete these emails, and I’m sure many others do this as well.

After you’ve been in IM for a while, it’s only natural to get to know other marketers, or at least make some acquaintances along the way. Those marketers who look for JVs (joint ventures) are even more in the thick of things and interact with other marketers regularly. Even though your goal is to make money, you can do this more effectively in the long run by being as giving and generous as possible when interacting with others. This doesn’t mean you should never make a profit, but you should also make sure you’re also focused on the needs of others. Those who provide services to others must be especially aware of this principle. Sure, some customers will try to get over on you but so will a lot of business people. So just be professional, polite, and respectful toward other business owners and your customers.

No business exists in isolation; you are part of a wider industry of one kind or another and you should pay attention to the latest news relating to this topic. Beyond this, pay attention to the business world at large, as this affects you too. If you’re business is web based, you must pay special attention to what’s happening in this area. The rules and trends pertaining to online marketing change constantly. You might be doing fine, but at some point your world is turned upside down due to an action taken by Google or Amazon. The business model you’re counting on today could be obsolete next month, so you always need a Plan B. So it can be a fatal mistake to not make contingency plans in case big changes occur. New businesses have to test the waters and find out what approaches work best for them. You don’t, however, have to learn everything by trial and error if you gather some solid information. Some quality internet marketing books or courses are a worthwhile investment. If you do make a mistake, don’t worry about it but correct it as soon as possible. After a while, you’ll find that you will develop an instinct for avoiding mistakes.
